Yesterday morning, I got hit with the early signs of the flu: Headache, bodyache, swollen throat, chills. I gave my digestion a break for almost 24 hours while nourishing my body with nothing but warm water and my Garlic/Ginger/Lemon/Cayenne Pepper tea.
After 12 hours of sleep, plenty of fluids in my body, and a hot yoga sweat-session, I was feeling pretty great. But I was also famished! It had been almost 24 hours since I had eaten anything. I looked around my kitchen for something that would (1) fill me up, (2) give me loads of Vitamin C and (3) not make my digestion work too hard (the less energy my body needs to digest, the more energy it has to direct toward healing).
My "Just What the Doctor Ordered" Green Smoothie. The strawberries and kale each provide this smoothie with at least 150% of my recommended daily Vitamin C intake. So the next time you're feeling under the weather, give yourself plenty of fluids and rest, and when you're ready to eat again, treat your body to this easy-to-digest, Vitamin C packed, delicious smoothie and you'll be back on your feet in no time!
- 1 1/2 cups water (more or less depending on how thick/liquidy you want the consistency)
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1 cup raspberries
- 2-4 HUGE handfuls of kale
- 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
- Stevia, to taste (optional - adds a touch of sweetness)
- Combine ingredients in a blender in the order listed
- Blend until smooth
- Enjoy and feel better!
